( 3 Articles )

In order to assert their claim on British Columbia, the British sent the Royal Engineers, who surveyed the area in 1858. They also built Old Yale Road, the first road link through the Fraser Valley. British sovereignty was protected and the reward offered to the engineers after their tour of duty was a pre-emption of land at a very reasonable price. Here you will find articles on the general history and beginnings of Abbotsford.

The first settlers in the area were the Sto:lo people, residents for over 10,000 years, known as part of the Coast Salish. They were the first hunters, boat builders, fishers, gatherers, loggers and made extensive use of the Fraser River and its tributraries.
